Biography
Katherine
“Katie” Tarbox, is the author of best-selling book,
Katie.com, a ground breaking memoir detailing her account with an
Internet Predator. When she was only thirteen, Ms. Tarbox was a
victim of Internet predator and consequently became involved in
a landmark Federal case. Her case was one of the first to be tried
under the 1996 Communications Decency Act and is still referenced
by many legal cases today.
At the age of eighteen, Tarbox published her memoir
and became the leading advocate for Internet safety regarding Internet
predators. She has appeared in numerous media outlets such as Oprah,
The Today Show, Time Magazine, CNN and People. Tarbox remains current
on issues surrounding Internet safety by working with experts in
both the public and private sector. She uses her expertise to testify
for Congressional hearings on many occasions and to work with various
non-profit organizations.
Internet safety is a worldwide concern. In the summer
of 2002, NHK of Japan produced a one-hour documentary regarding
Tarbox’s work with victims of Internet crimes and her efforts
to help law enforcement understand this crime. This documentary
has been widely distributed throughout Asia and Europe. In the summer
of 2004, Court TV produced a similar documentary of Tarbox’s
work and is hosted by Al Roker. The day that her documentary aired,
Mayor Bloomberg proclaimed Internet Safety Day in New York City.
After the publication of her book world-wide, Tarbox
lectures internationally on many aspects of Internet safety from
predators to pornography. She is recently a graduate of the University
of Pennsylvania.
